TAMUCC's Leadership in Nursing Systems MSN: field hours and the capstone
Leadership in Nursing Systems is TAMUCC's 40-credit online MSN for nurses moving into management and executive roles. Its field work, a finance lab, leadership experiences and the NURS 5469 capstone, takes place in Texas at organizations you select. TAMUCC's sources give two different hour totals, 180 and 225, and we plan your placement so it covers whichever your faculty confirm.

A leadership MSN with real field work
TAMUCC offers Leadership in Nursing Systems online and part-time, so registered nurses can keep working through it. The 40 credits start with the 12-credit MSN core, then move into finance, human capital, informatics, quality, organizational design, health economics and health law, with several of those courses shared with TAMUCC's healthcare administration (HCAD) offerings.
Field work on this track comes in three kinds, per the catalog: a finance lab worked through case studies, time spent observing nurse leaders, and a capstone project. Every piece of it has to happen in Texas, under the same Texas-only rule that covers all MSN clinical education, and the catalog leaves the choice of organization and mentor to you.
Applicants bring an RN license that permits Texas practice, whether Texas-issued or multistate compact, a minimum 3.00 GPA over their most recent 60 hours, and an admission essay. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and TAMUCC names no set starting semester for Leadership students.
The 40-credit course plan
NURS 5163 requires nearly the whole program before you can enroll, and it runs in the same term as the capstone. That puts the heaviest field work at the end of your plan, which is exactly when a confirmed site matters most. Your Degree Planner, not a public schedule, shows the term you reach it.

180 or 225 field hours: TAMUCC's two figures
TAMUCC publishes two totals for this track and does not reconcile them. The 2026-27 catalog asks for a minimum of 180 hours of field experience. The MSN Student Handbook updated in July 2026 lists 225 clinical hours and notes that the number has applied since 2017.

The course-level numbers line up with the handbook, though the leadership lab estimate treats its three weekly lab hours as running for fifteen weeks. Ask your course faculty which total governs your cohort, and read the handbook edition that matches your admission term: the July 2026 edition covers students admitted in Fall 2026 or later. Planning a site that can support 225 hours covers you either way.
The capstone's 135 clinical hours must be complete before the last week of its semester. Every week a site confirmation slips is a week you no longer have to finish them.
The capstone and the smaller field components
Four credits, one lecture hour, nine weekly lab hours and a required B or better: that is NURS 5469 Patterns of Care Delivery, the track's capstone. Because NURS 5163 runs beside it, the project management plan and the capstone project develop together in one term. The NURS 5469 capstone guide covers the course itself.
The earlier components are smaller but still need a real setting. Leadership Theories in Nursing Practice (NURS 5362) includes clinical lab time, and the catalog's leadership exposure experiences call for a setting where practicing nurse leaders let you observe their work. The finance course's 45 lab hours are built on case study analysis.
TAMUCC publishes no fixed term plan for these courses. Public syllabi show NURS 5469 running in Fall 2025, and TAMUCC's handbook schedules each MSN course a single time per year, so missing one can cost you twelve months. Confirm your capstone term in the Degree Planner rather than assuming a season.
Choosing a leadership site in Texas
A leadership placement works differently from a patient-care rotation. You want an organization where a nurse leader will let you watch decisions being made about budgets, staffing and quality, and will hand you a capstone project the organization actually needs. Nursing administration in a hospital, a health system's quality or informatics office, or a clinic network's operations team can each fit, provided your faculty approve the setting.
TAMUCC's detailed preceptor criteria are written for FNP clinicals; none are published for this track. Ask course faculty what they expect of a leadership preceptor before you commit to one.
Health systems that publish student rules require an agreement with the school before any rotation. A brand-new agreement with TAMUCC can take a full quarter of a year, and big systems often run past that; the affiliation agreements guide explains the request. Leadership hours and a future DNP
If a doctorate is on your horizon, treat your field hours as records you will need again. The DNP's practice requirement is 1,000 post-baccalaureate hours, and TAMUCC counts qualifying MSN field or clinical hours toward it, to a ceiling of 500, documented through its Practice Hours Verification Form.
The Executive Leadership track of the DNP wants a master's in nursing aimed at administration, or an equivalent master's. Is TAMUCC's Leadership in Nursing Systems MSN fully online?
The coursework is online and part-time. The field hours are the in-person part: the finance lab, the leadership experiences and the capstone take place at Texas organizations you select. Students should also plan for an occasional on-campus event; TAMUCC notifies them of the dates.
Does TAMUCC find the capstone site for Leadership students?
No. The 2026-27 catalog puts Leadership students in charge of choosing where their field hours happen and who oversees them, and it confines those hours to Texas. Faculty approve the setting once you propose it. We handle the search, the introduction and the paperwork preparation so the capstone site is settled before the term begins.
What GPA and grades does the Leadership MSN require?
TAMUCC's graduate programs require a program GPA of at least 3.0, and NURS 5469 needs a B or better for credit. Two course failures lead to dismissal under the MSN handbook, which words its C-grade rule in two different ways. The grades and progression guide sets out both versions.
When should I start looking for a leadership capstone site?
Start at least two terms before NURS 5469. The capstone comes near the end of the program alongside NURS 5163, an unsigned agreement can hold things up for months, and faculty need time to approve the setting. An early start also gives the organization time to shape a project it genuinely wants done.
Can I complete Leadership field hours in another state?
No. The Leadership in Nursing Systems catalog page requires field experiences in Texas, and the MSN handbook applies the same rule to all clinical education. Even if you study from outside Texas on a compact RN license authorized for Texas practice, every field component, including the capstone, still has to take place at a Texas organization.
