Typhon's Clinical Site Directory: past TAMUCC sites and the dates that matter

Typhon Group is where TAMUCC nurse practitioner students log patient encounters, and it also holds the one list the school offers of sites and preceptors earlier students used. The Clinical Site Directory shows whether TAMUCC has an affiliation agreement with a site and when that contract starts and ends. Read those dates correctly and you know, before asking anyone, whether hours can start on time or a new agreement has to come first.

What Typhon does for TAMUCC students

TAMUCC's faculty handbook names Typhon as the tracking system for FNP students in both the MSN and the post-master's certificate, as well as DNP students. For FNP students, the Student Clinical Guide sets up access "prior to the start of clinicals" and gives the system two roles. It "will allow students to search previously used clinical sites and preceptors," and once rotations begin it is where you record every patient encounter.

Behind the scenes, Typhon is run by TAMUCC's Student Success Data Specialist, who also loads the site and preceptor records you search. That is the title to ask if your account has not appeared as the term approaches; the clinical roles guide sets out who handles what.

DNP students use Typhon as well. Their handbook calls it the clinical experience platform, and the Executive Leadership syllabus for NURS 6331 has students log practice hours there.

Searching for past sites and preceptors

A directory search is the quickest way to find practices that already know TAMUCC's paperwork. Search by the practice's name, and try the parent health system's name as well when a clinic belongs to one. Note each listing's contract dates as you go.

Treat each result as a lead rather than an answer. A listing tells you an earlier TAMUCC student trained there. It says nothing about whether that preceptor is still at the practice, has room this term, or meets today's requirements. Every preceptor must be asked afresh, screened against TAMUCC's preceptor requirements and signed onto a new packet for your semester.

A past listing still deserves a place near the top of your call list. A provider who has precepted for TAMUCC already knows the evaluation forms and the end-of-term hours log, and a site with a current contract removes the longest wait in the whole process.

Reading the contract start and expiration dates

A site with a TAMUCC agreement shows a Contract Start Date and a Contract Expiration Date in the directory. Line both up against your term. For the 2026-27 year, the fall semester spans August 24 through December 10 and the spring semester January 19 through May 11.

The last three rows all lead to a new agreement, which TAMUCC says can take up to three months to sign, with large health systems tending to take much longer. How that request works is covered in affiliation agreements.

What the directory leaves out

Typhon shows TAMUCC's side of the contract. Many Texas health systems run their own student-request process on top of it, and those rules live on the system's own pages. San Antonio's CHRISTUS Santa Rosa sets a four-week minimum between its rotation registration and your first day, and it expects you to arrive with a preceptor already secured. UT Southwestern in Dallas says its advanced practice office offers no clinician matching. University Health in San Antonio lists TAMUCC among its affiliated schools.

Those details change the plan. A current TAMUCC contract with a large system sits alongside the system's own forms, orientation and badge steps rather than replacing them, so read the system's student page as soon as a preceptor there says yes. Typhon after your first clinical day

Once your clinical faculty member clears you, Typhon becomes your daily log. TAMUCC expects every patient encounter recorded, at a pace of about two patients an hour, and those records are one way to show the pediatrics, women's health and geriatrics minimums across the program. The rules for entries are in Typhon case logs.

Your hours should reflect direct patient care only, so meal breaks and time spent off the clinic floor stay out of the log. Keeping entries current week by week is far easier than rebuilding a month of encounters from memory near the end of term.

At term's end the Clinical Hours Log goes out through DocuSign for your signature, your preceptor's and the FNP Clinical Coordinator's. That signed log also generates the hours certificate TAMUCC gives your preceptor, so accurate entries matter to them as much as to you.

From a directory search to a signed placement

The directory gives you names from past semesters. Questions TAMUCC students ask

Does a Typhon listing mean TAMUCC has already approved the site for me?

No. A listing shows that an earlier TAMUCC student used the site and whether a contract is on file. Approval for your course is your assigned clinical faculty member's call, made after reviewing the site and preceptor together. Your hours count only after the agreement is active, the preceptor's packet is complete and you have been cleared.

My preceptor's site has a TAMUCC agreement, but the preceptor is not in Typhon. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. The affiliation agreement covers the site, and TAMUCC's data specialist enters preceptor records in Typhon. A preceptor new to TAMUCC still needs a completed Preceptor Agreement Packet with CV information and a recent license copy, plus your clinical faculty member's approval, before any hours with them count.

When do TAMUCC FNP students get Typhon access?

The FNP Student Clinical Guide says access is set up before clinicals begin. Because Typhon doubles as your search tool, it pays to have it early in the semester before your first clinical course, while there is still time for a new agreement. If it has not arrived, ask the Student Success Data Specialist.

Can I rely on Typhon alone to find a TAMUCC preceptor?

Some students do, but the directory only covers places TAMUCC has used before, and a listing can be far from where you live or out of date. TAMUCC's own guide notes that most FNP students lean on their personal network first. Treat Typhon as one source among several and start early enough to widen the search.

Do DNP students search the Typhon directory too?

TAMUCC's faculty handbook lists Typhon for the DNP, and DNP syllabi log hours there, but the published search instructions come from the FNP guide. DNP students secure sites with a support letter from the organization where they will practice and a facilitator from their own community. Ask your DNP chair how the directory fits your practice hours.
