NP preceptors in San Antonio and the Hill Country

San Antonio is home to University Health, whose student placement pages list Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi among its affiliated schools. A name on a list is a head start, not a preceptor. Here is what the city's systems publish, where the Hill Country fits and how to match sites to each FNP course.

University Health: what its pages say

University Health's affiliated-schools list includes "Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi." Its affiliation pages also set terms for any school seeking a new agreement: the school must be non-profit, physically based in Texas and placing multiple students, and for-profit or out-of-state schools do not qualify. University Health puts a new agreement at about six to eight weeks.

A search summary of its student placement page adds that a school coordinator submits rotation requests 30 to 45 days before the start date. Neither page says whether students must bring their own preceptor.

Whatever the list shows, TAMUCC's own steps still decide when you can begin at any site: its status in Typhon's Clinical Site Directory, a Preceptor Agreement Packet for the semester and clearance from your clinical faculty.

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and CHRISTUS Children's

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and CHRISTUS Children's route students through an "AHP Clinical Rotation Registration Form" handled by the graduate medical education office. Three conditions come first: a current affiliation agreement with your clinical program, a preceptor you have already secured, and the form filed no later than four weeks before your planned start. The GME office says outright that it does not help students find preceptors.

One wrinkle is particular to San Antonio. If your preceptor holds a Baylor College of Medicine appointment, BCM adds its own approval, which can take up to six weeks, so ask about appointments before you set a start date.

CHRISTUS Children's is worth knowing for NURS 5644, the pediatric-focus course, if a pediatric clinician there agrees to precept you. The same three conditions apply to that route as to any other CHRISTUS unit in the city.

Across the rest of the city

San Antonio also has plenty of settings with no student office at all: independent family practices, pediatric groups, OB/GYN and women's health clinics, urgent care and community health centers. At a practice like that, one clinician's agreement plus TAMUCC's contract and packet is the entire path.

South Texas AHEC runs its program office from UT Health San Antonio and oversees five regional centers, one of them South Central. It is a regional network worth asking for introductions to clinicians who teach.

Pick sites along the routes you already drive. Under TAMUCC's guide, clinic days normally fall Monday to Friday inside an 8-to-5 window and have to work for your clinical faculty's calendar too, so a clinic near work or home keeps a 135-hour course from swallowing your week.

The Hill Country and New Braunfels

In the Hill Country towns north and west of the city, small family practices and rural clinics are the likeliest sites. For a TAMUCC student that can work well: a family practice that sees newborns through grandparents builds pediatric and geriatric encounters in the same term, which helps with TAMUCC's population minimums.

The trade-off is distance. A long drive twice a week adds up across a 16-week term, and a rural office still needs an active TAMUCC agreement before its first hour counts. Confirm that before you commit, since a new agreement can take up to three months.

Does University Health list TAMUCC as an affiliated school?

Yes. University Health's affiliated-schools list includes Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. Its pages do not say whether students bring their own preceptor, and a search summary of its placement page says a school coordinator submits rotation requests 30 to 45 days before the start. Do Texas practice rules limit which San Antonio NPs can precept?

Texas is a restricted practice state, so NPs prescribe under agreements with delegating physicians, and Texas BON rules name licensed APRNs among qualified preceptors. For TAMUCC the stricter test is its own: the preceptor must be a licensed NP or physician, nationally board certified, with at least two years in independent practice. Can I split one course between two San Antonio sites?

Yes, as long as both are fully set up. TAMUCC treats every site and every preceptor separately: each needs its own active agreement and its own signed packet before any hours there count. Two sites mean two agreement checks and two packets, and both schedules still need to suit your clinical faculty.

Is San Antonio too far away for my TAMUCC clinical faculty?

No. TAMUCC assigns clinical faculty by location, and its FNP guide says the program uses adjunct faculty in large Texas cities for students rotating there. Requests for a specific instructor are not taken, but you can make the evaluative visit easy by sharing your site address and weekday schedule once your preceptor commits.

How far ahead should I start a San Antonio search?

Work backward from the slowest step. A new TAMUCC agreement can take up to three months, a Baylor College of Medicine approval can add up to six weeks at CHRISTUS sites, and the CHRISTUS form itself is due four weeks before you start. Beginning a full semester ahead keeps every one of those clocks comfortable.
