NP preceptors in Austin and Central Texas
Austin's hospital systems route nursing students through a shared regional platform built around local colleges, and an NP student route did not turn up for either major system. For a TAMUCC student in Austin, Round Rock or San Marcos, the search leans on practices, with one Central Texas program farther north that places NP students by design.

The Central Texas Healthcare Partnership
Workforce Solutions Capital Area runs the Central Texas Healthcare Partnership, which operates a clinical placement software system for nursing, surgical technology and EMS students. It handles more than 18,000 rotations a year across 14 colleges. The page does not name the software and does not say whether graduate or NP students are covered.
Two Austin systems build on it: Ascension and St. David's both require students to complete the partnership's bridging modules. In other words, hospital student traffic in Austin runs through a shared system organized around colleges.
For an NP student the useful questions are narrower. Does a specific clinician want to precept you? And does TAMUCC already hold, or can it sign, an agreement with that clinician's site? Everything else follows from those two answers.
Ascension Seton and St. David's
At Ascension Seton, nursing students complete bridging modules through the partnership system, and Ascension's pages show no process written for NP students. St. David's HealthCare's Advanced Student Experience is an RN capstone for local Austin nursing schools rather than an NP rotation, and no separate NP intake appeared on its pages either.
If a clinician at either system offers to precept you, first check whether the site appears in Typhon's Clinical Site Directory. If it does not, TAMUCC needs a new "Initiate Affiliation Agreement" request, and its guide warns that big systems take the longest to sign.
Give a hospital-owned site the most lead time on your list, and keep a practice-based option alive beside it until the agreement is confirmed. That way a slow contract costs you a backup plan, not a semester.
Waco's AHEC: NP placement in Central Texas
Texas AHEC East's Waco Region places NP and PA students with preceptors in pediatrics, women's health, family medicine and internal medicine, which lines up closely with the focus of TAMUCC's NURS 5644 and NURS 5645. It affiliates only with institutions in Texas.
Its application deadlines are January 15 for spring, April 16 for summer and August 14 for fall. A search summary also mentions housing sponsors in Waco, Glen Rose and Bryan/College Station, which could matter to a student willing to spend a term away from Austin.
Before applying, ask TAMUCC's FNP Clinical Coordinator or your clinical faculty whether an affiliation between TAMUCC and the Waco program exists, and check every suggested site in Typhon. TAMUCC's own agreement, packet and clearance rules apply to any preceptor the program proposes.
Round Rock to San Marcos: choosing your corridor
The census metro stretches from Round Rock in the north through Austin to San Marcos in the south. A student in Round Rock and one in San Marcos are effectively shopping in different markets, so set a drive radius from home or work and search inside it first.
Because TAMUCC's clinical time normally falls within weekday business hours and must suit your clinical faculty too, a preceptor near your job makes a steady weekly rhythm realistic; one across the metro may not.
Inside that radius, pediatric groups, OB/GYN offices, women's health clinics and community health centers cover the two focused courses, while a busy family practice suits the 270-hour capstone. San Marcos students can also look south toward New Braunfels; our San Antonio page covers that side.
Educator and Leadership students in Central Texas
Not every TAMUCC student in Austin needs a clinical preceptor in the FNP sense. The MSN Nurse Educator track includes NURS 5459, a 135-hour teaching practicum with a preceptor, and the Leadership in Nursing Systems track builds to NURS 5469, a capstone with 135 clinical hours. Both tracks require field experiences in Texas, and the catalog makes students responsible for identifying the agencies and preceptors.
TAMUCC's public documents list no preceptor qualifications for these two tracks, so check with your course faculty on what they require of a preceptor before you approach one. Leadership students should also know that TAMUCC's sources disagree on total field hours: the 2026-27 catalog lists 180 field hours while the MSN handbook lists 225. Your course faculty and the handbook for your cohort settle which figure applies.

For a TAMUCC FNP rotation, identify the preceptor yourself, as TAMUCC requires, and expect the partnership only as onboarding if a system site asks for it.
Does St. David's Advanced Student Experience count toward FNP hours?
It is not built for them. St. David's describes the Advanced Student Experience as an RN capstone for local Austin nursing schools. FNP hours need a qualified NP, MD or DO preceptor, an active TAMUCC agreement with the site and a completed Preceptor Agreement Packet before any time counts toward your total.
Can I live in Austin and do a term of clinicals in Waco?
Yes, as long as the site is in Texas and fully set up. TAMUCC's rule concerns the state, not the city, so a Waco-area practice works once it has an active agreement and a completed packet and your clinical faculty clear you. Faculty are assigned by location, so tell them exactly where the site is.
What does TAMUCC give Austin preceptors for their time?
TAMUCC's preceptors volunteer. The university issues an hours certificate at semester's end, which the preceptor's certifying body may accept for continuing education, and it also offers appreciation letters and awards that recognize outstanding service.
