The Fall 2025 syllabus adds the deadline that shapes the whole term: "The 135 hours of clinical practice must be completed before the last week" of the semester.
The catalog also pairs it with NURS 5163 Project Management for Nurse Leaders, a 1-credit course taken at the same time. Because NURS 5163 requires nearly the entire program first, the capstone lands at the very end of your plan. By then you usually know which leadership problem you care about, and that problem is what a strong capstone placement is built around.
180 or 225 field hours: a TAMUCC conflict
TAMUCC's own documents disagree on the Leadership track's total. In the 2026-27 catalog the floor is 180 field hours. The July 2026 MSN Student Handbook puts the figure at 225, a number it says has held since 2017. Add up the course-level hours and you land on the handbook's figure, as the table shows.

The NURS 5362 figure assumes 3 lab hours across 15 weeks, so treat the 225 sum as arithmetic that happens to match the handbook. Whichever total applies to your cohort, the capstone's 135 does not move. Ask your course faculty or the MSN program coordinator which document governs your record, and keep their answer with your files.
Choosing an organization and a nurse leader
The catalog gives Leadership students the same duty as every graduate track: the job of finding the organization and the preceptor is yours, and the work has to take place in Texas. Finding your own preceptor explains what TAMUCC provides around that search.
TAMUCC publishes no preceptor qualifications for Leadership students, so the FNP checklist is the wrong yardstick here. What matters is fit: a nurse leader whose daily work covers the care-delivery questions in your syllabus, inside an organization that will give you real access to the people and processes your capstone project studies. Confirm the credentials your course faculty expect before you ask anyone to commit.
If you already work in a Texas health system, hosting the capstone at your employer can look like the easy answer. TAMUCC's published workplace limits are written for FNP rotations, so raise the question with your course faculty first and read clinicals where you work for the standard they may apply.
Agreements and lead time with larger systems
Whether your capstone organization needs a formal affiliation agreement with TAMUCC is a question for your course faculty, since the published agreement steps come from the FNP guide. That lead time is the reason to begin early. NURS 5469 has run in the fall (a Fall 2025 syllabus is public), the MSN handbook schedules each course once per calendar year, and your Degree Planner shows your own term. Work back from that term's first day: with the organization and leader settled two terms ahead, the paperwork has room to clear before week one.
Fitting 135 hours before the final week
Nine lab hours a week across a 15-week window gives exactly 135, which is how the catalog notation and the syllabus line up. The window closes a week before the term ends, and graduate nursing uses TAMUCC's long 16-week semester, not the shorter sessions. The academic calendar gives the 2026-27 dates.
Leadership work does not always arrive in tidy weekly blocks. Budget meetings, quality reviews and staffing decisions happen on the organization's schedule, not yours, so agree early with your preceptor on which recurring meetings and projects you will join. Front-load where you can: hours banked in the first half of the term protect you if a project stalls or your preceptor's calendar fills up late.
B or better, and protecting the placement
A grade below B in NURS 5469 earns no credit, and because the capstone comes last, a repeat pushes graduation back until the course is offered again. A placement that falls apart mid-term can put the grade itself at risk, not only the hours, since whatever practice remains must still be done before the last week.

Nurse leaders do change roles and employers mid-year. When you first meet your preceptor, ask who else in the same organization could step in if their role changes, and note which parts of your project depend on that one person. A named second contact is far easier to confirm with your course faculty than a fresh search in week ten.
