TAMUCC's nursing programs, seen from South Carolina

Coursework in South Carolina, clinicals in Texas
TAMUCC's MSN Student Handbook requires every part of clinical education and training to happen in Texas. For a nurse in Columbia or Greenville, that means studying online at home and relocating for each FNP clinical term. Texas-only clinicals has the wording.

TAMUCC has published no roster of states for online admission. Its advice to anyone outside Texas who is weighing a licensure program is to contact the College of Nursing and Health Sciences before committing. Start there.
South Carolina's compact license and TAMUCC admission
NCSBN's table shows South Carolina implementing the nurse compact on January 19, 2018. A multistate license, held with South Carolina as your primary residence, lets you practice as an RN in Texas, and TAMUCC's MSN treats a compact license authorized for Texas as equal to a Texas one. Advanced practice licensing does not travel the same way. No APRN Compact law exists in South Carolina, which leaves applicants to TAMUCC's DNP Nurse Practitioner track needing a Texas APRN license.
Practice agreements at home and in Texas
AANP rates South Carolina restricted. NPs there need a practice agreement with a physician before performing delegated medical acts, and the state limits how much of a controlled substance they may supply. Texas holds the same restricted rating, with NPs prescribing under agreements with a delegating physician.

How South Carolina's board treats programs based elsewhere
South Carolina's out-of-state rule, Regulation 91-6, is narrow. It applies when a program run by an institution based elsewhere holds clinicals meant to prepare students for initial licensure. Those programs need board approval before the clinicals start and must stay fully approved at home. The rule also calls for a signed clinical affiliation agreement, an on-site faculty member licensed in South Carolina or through the compact for every shift, and preceptorships that follow the state's own rules.
Graduate APRN and RN-to-BSN programs fall outside its text. A DNP student hoping to log practice hours in South Carolina would need TAMUCC's DNP program to decide first; see DNP practice hours.
The preceptor tax credit, and who it reaches
South Carolina rewards preceptors through an income tax credit and deduction in state code section 12-6-3800, created in 2019 and amended in 2024. Eligible preceptors are physicians, APRNs and PAs who teach without pay, see a qualifying number of Medicaid and Medicare patients, and supervise two or more rotations in a year, each lasting 160 hours or more in settings the law lists. Only students from the state's own public and independent colleges count, which rules out a TAMUCC student.
A 2024 change extended the credit to tax year 2029, with repeal set for January 1, 2030. An older revenue ruling still lists January 1, 2026, the original sunset, so preceptors should check with the Department of Revenue.
Health systems and metros across the state
Columbia, the Charleston-North Charleston area and Greenville-Anderson-Greer are South Carolina's biggest metros, and part of the state's north falls within metro Charlotte. Among the larger systems, Lexington Health and McLeod Health sit beside Prisma, MUSC Health and Roper St. Francis Healthcare. They are context, not TAMUCC clinical sites.

Questions TAMUCC students ask
Can I do TAMUCC FNP clinicals in Charleston or Columbia?
No. The MSN requires all clinical education and training in Texas, and each of the four FNP clinical courses follows that rule. Study online from South Carolina, then plan to live in Texas for each full clinical semester.
Does a South Carolina multistate license work for TAMUCC's MSN?
It fits TAMUCC's compact route, which accepts an RN license from a compact state when it authorizes practice in Texas. Make sure yours is multistate and that South Carolina is your declared home state. Admission still depends on TAMUCC's full review, so check with the College of Nursing and Health Sciences early.
Would a South Carolina preceptor earn the state's tax credit for teaching a TAMUCC student?
Not under the statute's wording. The law limits qualifying rotations to students of South Carolina's own public and independent colleges and universities, and TAMUCC is a Texas university. TAMUCC's own recognition for its volunteer preceptors is an hours certificate, letters of appreciation and university awards.
Will TAMUCC's FNP prepare me for NP licensure in South Carolina?
TAMUCC's licensure disclosure says the MSN meets educational requirements for FNP certification across the country, setting aside four places where TAMUCC has made no determination: California, DC, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
