Can a Rhode Island nurse study at TAMUCC?
The online coursework fits life in Rhode Island; the clinical hours do not, because TAMUCC's MSN puts every clinical and field hour in Texas. A single line in TAMUCC's MSN Student Handbook settles most of this: clinical education and training take place in Texas, with no exceptions listed. That covers the FNP's four clinical courses, and the MSN names no other location. The quotation and its context sit on the Texas-only page.

TAMUCC prints no roster of states it enrolls online students from, though its archived state authorization page counted Rhode Island among its NC-SARA states. For a licensure program based outside your home state, TAMUCC asks you to contact its College of Nursing and Health Sciences before you commit. Make that your first call.
Rhode Island's return to the compact
Rhode Island rejoined the nurse compact on January 1, 2024. Since that date, qualifying residents who receive an RN or LPN license get the multistate version. That matters for TAMUCC, whose MSN admission accepts a compact RN license with Texas practice privileges as an alternative to a Texas license. If your license dates from before 2024, or you are unsure which kind you hold, ask the Rhode Island board; the license page covers TAMUCC's side.
Advanced practice has no equivalent yet. Rhode Island has not adopted the APRN Compact, which still lacks enough member states to launch, so TAMUCC's DNP Nurse Practitioner track continues to ask for a Texas APRN license.
Rhode Island NP practice beside your Texas rotations
In AANP's ratings, Rhode Island earns full practice status. NPs there work under the nursing board's authority without a required physician contract. Texas is rated restricted, so the NP preceptors teaching TAMUCC students there prescribe through prescriptive authority agreements with a physician.

What Rhode Island's board rules say about schools from elsewhere
Rhode Island licenses nurses through a board housed in its health department. That board's education rule, cited as 216-RICR-40-05-3, is written for approving basic programs inside the state. Nowhere does it tell a school from another state to obtain approval before its students begin clinical work in Rhode Island.
One more detail sits in that rule: when an approved in-state program signs with a clinical agency, the agreement must reflect the program's use of Rhode Island's central registry for placements. Whether outside schools face the same expectation is left open. For TAMUCC's MSN the point is academic, since the hours stay in Texas. For a DNP student it would matter only if TAMUCC allowed practice hours in Rhode Island, a question its DNP materials leave open, so ask the program; DNP practice hours lists what TAMUCC requires of a practice organization.
Health care in Rhode Island, for context
In census terms Rhode Island has one metro area, Providence-Warwick, and it reaches over the line into Massachusetts. Its main providers include South County Health, CharterCARE, Brown University Health and the Care New England system. They are named to sketch the landscape and are not clinical hosts for TAMUCC students. Official Rhode Island sources show no tax credit or stipend for preceptors.

Questions TAMUCC students ask
Is a Rhode Island nursing license enough to enter TAMUCC's MSN?
It can be, if it is a multistate license and Rhode Island is your primary residence, because TAMUCC accepts a compact RN license that authorizes practice in Texas. Licenses issued before Rhode Island rejoined in 2024 may differ, so check yours. Final admission rests with TAMUCC, so confirm with its College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Can I complete FNP clinicals at a practice in Providence?
No. TAMUCC's MSN keeps all four FNP clinical courses in Texas, with preceptors and sites that TAMUCC's clinical faculty clear. Rhode Island residents can take the online courses at home, but each clinical term calls for living within reach of a Texas site for the full semester.
Will TAMUCC's FNP count toward NP licensure in Rhode Island?
TAMUCC's disclosure says the MSN meets FNP certification education requirements everywhere except California, the District of Columbia and two territories, where TAMUCC has not made a determination. Would TAMUCC students use Rhode Island's central placement registry?
The registry language in Rhode Island's rule concerns agreements signed by programs the state itself approves, with no word on schools from elsewhere. Because TAMUCC's MSN clinicals take place in Texas, the registry does not come into play for FNP, Educator or Leadership students.
