North Carolina to Corpus Christi: planning TAMUCC's Texas clinicals

Texas holds all the clinical hours
No TAMUCC MSN track offers an out-of-state clinical path; the July 2026 MSN Student Handbook assigns clinical education and training to Texas alone. Living in North Carolina, you would plan each clinical course as a block of time in one Texas city, mostly weekdays, with every hour logged before the semester closes. TAMUCC has not published the states from which it accepts online nursing students, so put the question to its nursing college before you apply. The university asks precisely that of out-of-state students entering licensure programs.
A North Carolina compact license and TAMUCC admission
North Carolina has belonged to the current compact since January 19, 2018. If North Carolina is your primary residence and your license is multistate, it includes RN privileges in Texas, matching the catalog's MSN admission language. Handbook wording differs slightly, naming a Texas license and allowing conditional entry; the Texas RN license guide puts both side by side.
APRNs sit outside the compact. TAMUCC's NP-track DNP expects the APRN license to be a Texas one, and the APRN Compact has no North Carolina enactment.
Restricted practice in both states
AANP classifies North Carolina as restricted. Every North Carolina NP works under a physician agreement for the length of a career, and NP licensing is handled jointly by a subcommittee of the nursing and medical boards. Texas wears the same label, with prescriptive authority agreements tying NPs to a delegating physician, so a North Carolina nurse will recognize the setup in a Texas preceptor's clinic. Perhaps you have worked for ECU Health, Novant Health, Duke Health, UNC Health or Atrium Health, which is now part of Advocate Health. The Charlotte metro, which spills into South Carolina, is the state's largest, ahead of Raleigh, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Those names open doors with Texas preceptors, even though the clinicals themselves remain in Texas.
NCBON and graduate students from other states
The North Carolina Board of Nursing takes a hands-off view of graduate education: by its own account it passes no judgment on post-licensure graduate programs from anywhere, and RN-BSN, master's and doctoral programs sit beyond its jurisdiction. Its rule for schools based elsewhere, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, concerns unlicensed students and has the North Carolina agency's chief nurse file a request at least 30 days ahead.
Two points could reach a TAMUCC DNP student. A graduate student licensed neither in North Carolina nor through a multistate license must ask the board's Licensure Department what clinicals in the state require. And since North Carolina entered SARA in June 2016, the board says students at SARA colleges may qualify for field placements there. Questions TAMUCC students ask
Can a North Carolina resident do TAMUCC FNP clinicals in Charlotte or Raleigh?
Not under current rules. Every FNP rotation must be served in Texas, and TAMUCC has published no exception for students living elsewhere. You would keep your North Carolina address for the online classes and stay in Texas for each of the four clinical courses, working under a Texas NP, MD or DO whom TAMUCC's clinical faculty have cleared.
Will my North Carolina license work for TAMUCC's MSN admission?
If it is multistate and North Carolina is your primary residence, it carries RN practice privileges in Texas, which the catalog accepts. Handbook language points to a Texas license, with a conditional start allowed. Because the two sources differ, get TAMUCC's answer for your own intake.
Does TAMUCC's FNP meet North Carolina's requirements for NP practice?
On the education side, yes, by TAMUCC's own disclosure, which leaves only California and three non-state jurisdictions, namely DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, undetermined for FNP certification education requirements. NP approval there runs through the joint subcommittee, and practice depends on a physician agreement.
Is NCBON approval needed for a TAMUCC DNP practicum in North Carolina?
By the board's own description, post-licensure graduate programs receive neither its approval nor its disapproval, and doctoral programs are beyond its jurisdiction. A graduate student lacking a North Carolina or multistate license should still check with its Licensure Department. TAMUCC has to agree to any practicum location first, so start there.
