Missouri nurses considering TAMUCC

Missouri and Texas share two traits that matter here: both issue multistate licenses under the nurse compact, and both keep nurse practitioners tied to physicians. The difference is geography. TAMUCC's MSN places every clinical hour in Texas, so a nurse from St. Louis, Kansas City or Springfield spends each rotation there.

First, the Texas clinical rule

Coursework is online; clinical hours are Texan. TAMUCC's MSN handbook sets every hour of clinical education and training inside the state and offers no path elsewhere. The sourcing is gathered on Texas-only clinicals.

There is no public TAMUCC list of states it enrolls from. What TAMUCC does say is that students eyeing a licensure program away from home should check in with its College of Nursing and Health Sciences in advance, and a Missouri applicant should do exactly that.

A compact license that already reaches Texas

Missouri wrote the compact into statute at RSMo 335.360, effective July 2017, and NCSBN dates implementation to January 2018. Hold a multistate license with Missouri as your primary residence and you carry a privilege to work in Texas, which fits the compact option in TAMUCC's MSN admission. Advanced practice works differently. The APRN Compact counts only Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming as enacting states, two short of the seven it needs, so Missouri NPs still license state by state; entering TAMUCC's DNP as an NP takes a Texas APRN license.

Career-long collaboration in Missouri, delegation in Texas

AANP calls Missouri restricted. A Missouri NP never outgrows the collaborative practice arrangement with a physician; it lasts the whole career and brings caps on ratios, required chart review and limits on controlled substances. Texas is also restricted and uses prescriptive authority agreements, so the NP preceptors in TAMUCC's Texas rotations work under a physician tie that Missouri nurses will recognize.

Large Missouri systems include SSM Health and Mercy, as well as CoxHealth, MU Health Care and BJC HealthCare, while the biggest metros are St. Louis and Kansas City, followed by Springfield and Columbia. They appear as context, not as sites that take TAMUCC students.

Tax credits, board rules and a DNP question

Missouri's Community-Based Faculty Preceptor Tax Credit, available since 2023, rewards physicians and PAs holding Missouri licenses when they teach the state's medical or PA students without direct pay. NPs and nursing students sit outside it, so it plays no part in NP precepting.

For students from other states, official sources show no Missouri State Board of Nursing rule calling for approval or notice before a placement. The Board's program rules cover programs it approves, and the statute exempting supervised student practice refers to approved schools without saying how programs from elsewhere are treated. TAMUCC states no Texas-only rule for DNP hours either, so any Missouri plan begins with the DNP program; see DNP practice hours.

Questions TAMUCC students ask

Can TAMUCC FNP clinicals be done in Kansas City or St. Louis?

TAMUCC's MSN confines clinical hours to Texas, so a clinic in Kansas City or St. Louis cannot host any MSN or FNP certificate rotation. Courses can be taken online from Missouri, but each rotation means living in Texas for its length. North Texas is one option; our Dallas-Fort Worth guide explains that market.

Is my Missouri nursing license accepted for TAMUCC's MSN?

A multistate Missouri license can meet the license requirement, because TAMUCC's MSN accepts a compact license authorized for Texas and both states belong to the compact. Keep Missouri as your declared primary residence. TAMUCC reviews the rest of the application, so check the details with its College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Does Missouri's preceptor tax credit help me find an NP preceptor?

The Missouri credit covers physicians and physician assistants teaching Missouri medical and PA students, and it leaves out NPs and nursing students. For TAMUCC MSN students the point is moot, since preceptors must be at Texas sites. Preceptors who volunteer for TAMUCC receive an hours certificate and letters of appreciation, and the university gives preceptor awards.

Does TAMUCC's FNP meet Missouri's requirements for NP practice?

On education, yes: Missouri appears on the covered side of TAMUCC's licensure disclosure for FNP certification. Practice in Missouri then runs through a collaborative arrangement with a physician for as long as you practice. See the licensure disclosure.
