Illinois nurses and TAMUCC: a single-state license, Texas clinicals
Two facts decide how TAMUCC fits an Illinois nurse. Illinois belongs to no nurse licensure compact, so its RN license does not reach Texas, and TAMUCC's MSN completes every clinical hour in Texas. Both point south, and this page follows them in turn before covering the Illinois rules that could still apply.

TAMUCC delivers its graduate lectures and assignments online, so your address matters little until precepted courses begin. Whether TAMUCC will enroll an Illinois resident is not answered on any TAMUCC page. What the university does say is that licensure-program applicants outside Texas should raise their plans with CONHS ahead of time, and from Chicago or Peoria that call belongs at the top of the list.
Why an Illinois license needs a Texas counterpart
NCSBN's compact map shows Illinois as a non-member with no compact bill pending. An Illinois RN license therefore works only in Illinois, and it satisfies neither half of TAMUCC's catalog requirement: Texas-issued, or compact and valid in Texas. An Illinois-only nurse plans on getting licensed in Texas; under the MSN handbook, a conditionally admitted student has until the first semester ends to finish that. For the DNP Nurse Practitioner track the bar is higher again: a Texas APRN license, which no compact covers.
Collaborative agreements in Illinois, prescriptive authority in Texas
Should a TAMUCC FNP graduate head back to Illinois, AANP's label there is reduced practice: some settings call for a physician collaborative agreement, and prescribing select Schedule II drugs or benzodiazepines comes with extra practice, CE and consultation conditions. Texas, rated restricted, goes further: prescribing there depends on a prescriptive authority agreement signed with a delegating physician. What Illinois asks of out-of-state programs
Illinois spells out, in section 1300.340(n) of its nursing rules, what a program from another state files before its students take clinical placements in Illinois:
- home-state board approval or accreditation, shown in writing
- a letter of request: time frame, clinical agencies, units
- syllabi
- the executed facility contract
- faculty qualification forms and preceptor forms
Renewal every two years comes with annual reports, and teaching faculty must hold Illinois RN licensure. Because the clause sits among RN program-approval rules, nobody can say from its text whether a graduate or APRN program is covered. A neighboring clause wants staff preceptors cleared and oriented by program faculty, physically available during all student care, and RN-licensed in the state where the student practices.

Illinois systems and a credit for precepting
Work history at Northwestern Medicine, Advocate Health Care, UChicago Medicine, Endeavor Health or OSF HealthCare impresses a Texas preceptor, though TAMUCC rotations happen at none of them. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin dominates the state's population, trailed by the Illinois side of the St. Louis area, then Peoria and Rockford.
An Illinois APRN earns renewal CE credit for each academic term spent precepting an APRN student, capped per renewal cycle and documented by the school.

Questions TAMUCC students ask
Can I study TAMUCC's online FNP while living in Chicago?
The coursework is online, so a Chicago address does not block the lectures. The clinical courses are different: every precepted hour of TAMUCC's MSN is earned in Texas, which means leaving Chicago for each clinical course, and the non-compact Illinois license means adding a Texas one. TAMUCC makes no admission promise, so ask the program first.
Could TAMUCC get Illinois approval to place me locally?
Illinois approval never enters the plan, because TAMUCC keeps MSN clinicals in Texas without exception. Illinois's five-part filing matters only where a program actually places students inside Illinois, and TAMUCC's Family Nurse Practitioner students complete every clinical hour at Texas sites.
Does TAMUCC's MSN meet Illinois requirements for FNP practice later?
Illinois is one of the states covered by TAMUCC's licensure disclosure, which says the MSN meets the educational standard for FNP certification; California, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and D.C. are left undetermined. The Illinois license itself comes through IDFPR and the Illinois Board of Nursing, so confirm their APRN requirements before graduating.
Can an Illinois NP I know precept me for TAMUCC?
