Falling behind at TAMUCC is fixable while the semester is open and much harder once it closes, because hours cannot be carried forward. The way back is to measure the gap exactly, add clinical time TAMUCC will actually credit, and point any extra preceptor at the population you are short on.

Measure the gap before you fix it

Start with numbers, not worry. Pull your totals from Typhon and set them against what your course requires: NURS 5624 asks for 90 hours, the pediatric and women's health courses (NURS 5644, NURS 5645) for 135 apiece, and the NURS 5746 capstone for 270, as our 630-hour guide shows. Then count the clinic weeks left before the last class day, remembering that TAMUCC generally expects clinical time during weekday business hours.

Run the same check on the specialty minimums. Across the program, FNP students need 75 clinical hours each in pediatrics, women's health and geriatrics, or 150 documented encounters for each of those populations in Typhon. You can be on pace for total hours and still be short in one population.

Hours or encounters: pick the faster route

TAMUCC gives you two ways to meet each specialty minimum, and the encounter route can close a gap sooner. TAMUCC's guide assumes roughly two patients per clinic hour, so 150 encounters and 75 hours describe about the same workload; a busy clinic where you log carefully can get you there in fewer days. Encounters from earlier rotations also count toward a population's dedicated rotation.

Pediatrics and women's health each anchor a course, NURS 5644 and NURS 5645. Geriatrics is not the named focus of any single course, so it deserves a weekly look in Typhon from your very first rotation. A family practice with a mixed-age panel can feed all three counts at once, which makes it an efficient place to catch up. How to record each encounter is covered on our Typhon case logs page.

Ways to add hours TAMUCC will credit

What will not rescue a short semester

Some fixes students hope for simply are not available at TAMUCC. Minimum hours cannot be rolled into the next semester. Lunch breaks and time away from the clinic are not clinical time. An extension past the last class day is reserved for extreme situations such as hospitalization, and a missing preceptor does not qualify.

An Incomplete is narrow as well. TAMUCC's graduate catalog reserves it for a passing student derailed by circumstances they could not control, and a plain shortage of time is excluded. While it stays open, it bars you from any course that lists this one as a prerequisite. Padding a log risks far more than the course: TAMUCC's handbooks treat falsified clinical hours as a conduct violation.

Behind outside the FNP

Nurse Educator and Leadership students face an earlier finish line than most expect. The syllabi for the NURS 5459 education practicum and the NURS 5469 leadership capstone each require their 135 hours to be complete before the last week of the semester, not on the last day.

DNP students track progress toward 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours, of which up to 500 can come from the MSN. The DNP handbook warns that students may need to retake NURS 6195, the one-credit project seminar, to finish their practice hours, so a shortfall can mean another term of enrollment. The DNP chair oversees how those hours are logged and approves each practice experience, so bring any new site to the chair before you count time there.

Questions TAMUCC students ask

Can encounters from an earlier rotation count toward the pediatrics minimum?

They can help. TAMUCC's guide says prior encounters count toward a population's dedicated rotation, so children you saw in NURS 5624 add to your pediatric total. The course requirement is separate, though: each course still needs its full hours earned inside its own semester.

Does time spent charting count as clinical hours?

Documenting in the electronic health record counts when it is part of active patient care, and so does time discussing a patient with your preceptor. Lunch breaks and time away from the clinic do not. If a task falls somewhere in between, check with your clinical faculty before logging it.

Can I do clinical hours on weekends to catch up?

TAMUCC's guide describes clinical time as a weekday, daytime commitment in general, and it also has to suit your clinical faculty member's calendar. Weekend or evening time is not the norm, so get your clinical faculty member's agreement before you plan a catch-up schedule around it.

What happens if I finish the semester short on hours?

Every course's minimum has to be met within that course, so a short log puts your clinical grade at risk. An unsatisfactory clinical grade overrides the rest of your marks and fails the course, which must then be repeated before you move on, and the MSN handbook dismisses students after two course failures.

What patient pace does TAMUCC expect in clinic?

Roughly two patients per hour. That pace is the bridge in TAMUCC's guide between the 150-encounter route and the 75-hour route for each specialty population. A slow clinic seeing far fewer patients makes the encounter route harder, which is one more reason to choose a busy site when you are behind.
